Resolve to use water wisely in the coming year

Why not start the New Year with a resolution to use water wisely? WaterSense-labeled fixtures can make it an easy resolution to keep. The WaterSense-label is given to products that have been independently certified to be 20 percent more water-efficient than average products in that category and perform just as well or better.

Look for the WaterSense label when shopping for:

  • Bathroom sink faucets and accessories: You can conserve water every time you turn on the tap by installing WaterSense labeled faucets and aerators. Faucets and aerators that feature the label use a maximum of 1.5 gallons per minute and save the average household 700 gallons of water per year. They’ll also lower your energy bill by reducing the demand for your water heater.

  • Shower heads: The average family could save 2,900 gallons of water per year by installing WaterSense-labeled shower heads. These shower heads use a maximum of 2 gallons per minute and will help you wash off the grime as well or better than regular shower heads.  And just like with WaterSense-labeled faucets, they’ll help reduce the amount your water heater needs to work.

  • Toilets:  Toilets use the most water of any fixture in a home and account for nearly 30 percent of an average home’s water use. Older toilets can use as much as 6 gallons of water per flush. New WaterSense-labeled high-efficiency toilets use as little as 1.28 gallons per flush or less and still provide equal or superior performance to older models. Rebate available!

  • Weather-Based Sprinkler Timers: Replacing a standard clock-based sprinkler timer with a WaterSense-labeled weather-based sprinkler timer take the guesswork out of running sprinklers and can save the average home nearly 9,000 gallons of water each year. These timers act like a thermostat for your sprinkler system, telling it when to turn on and off and using local weather and landscape conditions to deliver just the right amount of water.
