Celebrate Smart Irrigation Month: Tips for a water-wise future

This July, remember to make every drop of water count by using it wisely. This is especially important during a drought, but it's also crucial to maintain these habits even when water is plentiful. Using water efficiently is always a good practice, particularly for landscapes, as most water use occurs outdoors to keep them thriving.

Efficient irrigation leads to a healthier landscape and contributes to a more sustainable future.

"Investing in smart irrigation systems is a win-win for everyone," says Bobby Alvarez, the Environmental Utilities water conservation administrator. "Residents can enjoy lush, green gardens while still saving water, and collectively, we can make a significant impact on water conservation."

Here are some essential tips to help you get started:

  • Upgrade your irrigation system: Invest in a weather-based irrigation controller. These smart devices adjust watering schedules based on real-time weather conditions, ensuring your plants receive the right amount of water.

  • Optimize your watering techniques: Use drip irrigation and rotary nozzles. Drip irrigation delivers water directly to the root zone, minimizing evaporation and runoff. MP rotators apply water evenly and slowly, reducing runoff and improving soil absorption.

  • Time your watering wisely: To reduce evaporation, water your plants before 10 a.m. or in the evening after 8 p.m. Check out our irrigation tips at Roseville.ca.us/savewater (select “Irrigation watering schedule”).

  •  Monitor soil moisture: Check soil moisture before turning on sprinklers. Use a moisture meter or hand shovel to assess the soil's moisture level and prevent overwatering.

  • Cycle and soak: Water your lawn in short intervals instead of one long interval. This allows the soil to absorb the water, reducing overwatering and runoff and keeping your lawn lush and green.
